KiXX Square framing walls

Forget the guesswork. The KiXX Square features large, cut-away notches and V-grooves for rapid stud layouts.

How to Mark Wall Stud Layouts:

  1. Step 1: Place the KiXX Square flat on your 2x4 or 2x6 (your "work piece").
  2. Step 2: Use the large, built-in notches at 3½" and 5½" to quickly mark the widths of 2x4s and 2x6s.
  3. Step 3: For other common layout marks (like trimmer studs), use the "V Groove" path at 1½", 3", and 4½".
KiXX Square anchor bolt feature

Get your drill position right the first time. The KiXX Square has a notched spine that fits around the anchor bolt, letting you mark the exact center.

How to Mark Anchor Bolt Holes:

  1. Step 1: Place your 2x4 or 2x6 "work piece" on the foundation next to the anchor bolt.
  2. Step 2: Stand the KiXX Square on its thick edge (the "spine"). The spine is notched to fit snugly around the bolt.
  3. Step 3: Find the hole that matches your material — 3½" (2x4) or 5½" (2x6).
  4. Step 4: Push your pencil through the correct hole to mark the exact drill position.

KiXX Square progressive scribe feature

Our Progressive Scribe feature makes it simple to draw lines parallel to the edge of a board.

How to Scribe a Parallel Line:

  1. Step 1: Hook the thick edge (the "spine") of the KiXX Square tight against the edge of your work piece.
  2. Step 2: Find the groove or slot for the measurement you need — from ¼" all the way up to 5¾".
  3. Step 3: Place your pencil into the desired slot.
  4. Step 4: While keeping the spine tight against the wood, slide the square back and forth to mark your line.
KiXX Square threaded pin angle shortcut

For common cuts, speed is everything. The removable ¼" "Threaded pin" acts as a physical stop to get an immediate 22.5° angle or 5/12 roof pitch.

How to Use the Threaded Pin Shortcut:

  1. Step 1: Identify the ¼" "Threaded pin" — a removable pin that can be screwed into a stationary position on the square.
  2. Step 2: Hook the square's spine over the edge of your work piece.
  3. Step 3: Pivot the square until the threaded pin makes firm contact with the top, flat edge of the wood.
  4. Step 4: The square is now "locked" at a perfect 22.5-degree angle. Trace your "Scribe Line" along the square's long edge.

KiXX Square rafter seat cut feature

Marking a perfect bird's mouth is no longer a multi-step process. Our "Hip & Val" system simplifies it.

How to Mark Rafter Seat Cuts (Bird's Mouth):

  1. Step 1: Determine the location of your cut. Place the "Seat Cut Pivot" point of the KiXX Square on this mark.
  2. Step 2: Pivot the square on that point until the "Hip or Valley SMALL marks" align with the top edge of the board.
  3. Step 3: Once aligned, trace along the square's long, flat edge to mark your horizontal "Seat Cut line".
KiXX Square Spine Usage

Leave the calculator in the truck. The spine of the KiXX Square is etched with the complex roof geometry tables you actually need on the job.

How to Use the Spine Info:

  1. Step 1: Look at the thick edge, or "spine," of the KiXX Square.
  2. Step 2: Align the specific mark on the spine with the edge of your lumber.
  3. Step 3: Read the data you need directly from the tool:
    • Rafter Length +/- @ 24" O.C.: Tells you how to adjust rafter lengths
    • Hip/Val Diagonal Layout: Numbers needed for diagonal hip and valley rafters
    • 48" Sheathing Cuts: Diagonal measurements for cutting 48-inch plywood sheets
KiXX Square Plumb Cut Feature

Every rafter starts here. The Common Rafter Plumb Cut is your vertical anchor line — get it right in seconds, not minutes.

How to Mark Common Rafter Plumb Cuts:

  1. Step 1: Pivot — Place the KiXX Square at the standard pivot point on your rafter.
  2. Step 2: Align — Rotate until your roof pitch number on the Common Rafter scale aligns perfectly with the edge of the board.
  3. Step 3: Scribe — Draw your vertical line to mark the "Plumb Common Cut."
